THE LONDON PARTICULAR
The London Particular (in their videos, essays and practice) directly challenge the politics of everyday dispossession. Our cities are being carved up by developers and banks, nefariously assisted by ever shifting, unaccountable 'public bodies'. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and other Scottish cities take their place in an ever-increasing phalanx of post-industrial British cities undergoing exclusionary, profit-driven, waterside 'regeneration' - "any puddle will do", (Iain Sinclair, psychogeographer).
The terms of the privatisation of space in any given location will shift - but similarities abound. The theoretical work of The London Particular can help us to flesh out these differences and continuities in our own particular urban localities; while preparing the ground for critical action in our attempts to reclaim our 'right to the city'. SPACE MATTERS - it "represents the spatial and social restructuring of the city in the interests of an elite minority". The London particular are contesting this parasitic restructuring - so can we.
http://thelondonparticular.org/
The London Particular is an open-ended urban research group which has been documenting, theorising and acting against regeneration and gentrification in East London since 2001.
In our view, so-called regeneration in fact represents the spatial and social restructuring of the city in the interests of an elite minority. Privatisation of space, housing and services, the displacement of working class communities, and authoritarian social control coincide with rising homelessness and falling living conditions.
In the name of inner city rebirth and renewal, regeneration gives us state-sponsored gentrification and an intensified attack on the working class. It obscures its true objectives behind a dense and proliferating fog of quangos, agencies, partnerships, and funding bodies. Unaccountable and untransparent, they collectively dictate the new shape of the city through a pseudo-democratic discourse of consultation and participation.
